The federal government has in principle approved a new scheme of studies under the National Curriculum, with a focus on reducing the academic burden on young children and introducing subjects considered more relevant to everyday life.

The draft was cleared by a technical committee on Tuesday, with officials saying the changes are aimed especially at students from nursery to grade two, who were found to be carrying too heavy a load at the start of their schooling.

Key Highlights of the New Syllabus

Federal Secretary of Education Nadeem Mahbub said the revised scheme would be finalized after further consultation before implementation. He said surveys carried out by the federal and provincial governments showed that children in the early grades were struggling because of the pressure created by the current structure.

The government also plans to bring back civic education in a revised form through a new social sciences and civic subject. Officials say the updated framework will also make room for areas such as:

  • Life safety skills
  • Climate change awareness
  • Financial literacy

Implementation Timeline

The education ministry wants the new syllabus to be introduced from the next academic session. According to officials, both the federal government and provinces are on board with the proposed direction.

The draft was discussed during the third meeting of the technical committee, attended by representatives from Islamabad, the provinces, AJK, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Focus on Early Childhood Education

The changes are aimed especially at students from nursery to grade two, who were found to be carrying too heavy a load at the start of their schooling. This child-centric approach is expected to reduce academic pressure and make learning more enjoyable for young students.

The reintroduction of civic education in a modernized form is seen as a significant step toward building responsible citizens who understand their rights and duties.
